Baptism is observed by many, but what does it mean? Is there a certain way shown in the scriptures for it to be done? Who can be baptized? And who actually has the authority from God to do the baptizing?

Matt. 28:18-20 Go ye Therefore
- The sole authority for scriptural baptism today lies in a New Testament Church.
- The Church is to teach the lost – need Christ for salvation, teach baptism, and the importance of Service the Lord.
John 1:6-8, 31-34 A man sent by God
- John the Baptist sent by God – to prepare the material for Jesus Christ.
- At this time only John the Baptist HAD the authority for scriptural baptism.
Matt. 3:6-8, 13-17 Baptism of Jesus Christ
- Christ sought out the ONLY recognized authority on earth.
- Before Christ started His Church – He received scriptural baptism first.
- Jesus had walked almost 60 miles to receive scriptural baptism. Does it matter who does the baptizing? It did to the Lord.
- Jesus was not baptized to become the Son of God – But to manifest, He is the Son of God.
- We are not baptized to become Sons of God – But to manifest to Him that we are.
* Baptism Does not Save / In order to be saved – your sins must be washed away –forgiven.
Rom. 5:8-9 Justified by His Blood
I Pet. 1:18-19 Redeemed by the Blood
I John 1:7 Cleanseth by the Blood
Rev. 1:5 Our sins washed by the Blood
Col. 1:14 Redemption through his Blood
* Redemption – is to set free.
* The Greek word for baptism is Baptizo which means to immerse, or plunge, or dip.
* They had another word for pour or to sprinkle which was never used in reference with
baptism.
* Rhantizo, Proschusis – Which is Greek means to sprinkle or to pour on or upon.
* Neither used in reference to BAPTISM.
* Ekcheo, Epicheo – Which means to pour out or upon.
* More than 50 times were these words used by Christ and His Apostles, never used with
reference to Baptism.
Eph. 4:5 One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism
- The Lord only recognizes one system of Doctrines and Teachings.
- The Lord only recognizes one type of baptism.
What is Baptism?
Col. 2:11-12 Buried with Him in Baptism
- Vs.11 Deals with salvation.
- After salvation follows Baptism – the first act of obedience to scriptural baptism.
- Baptism is a picture of a burial.
Rom. 6:1-8 Baptism is a Picture of Salvation
- Into – with reference to.
- We were baptized to show we died to sin, buried and now live.
II Cor. 5:17 If any man be in Christ, he is a New Creature
Acts 8:26-39 Ethiopia eunuch receives Christ, then baptize
- Eunuch desired baptism – But first must show repentance.
- After salvation follows baptism.
- Baptism is a complete immersion in water both went into the water.
I Pet. 3:21-22 Baptism answer of a good conscience
- Baptism is a picture / first act of obedience after salvation.
- Saved not speaking of spiritual – but physical.
* Not just anyone can baptize.
Matt. 28:18-20 Christ gave authority to His N.T. Church
* Church can only use those qualified in the scriptures.
* Only a God called ordained man, a Deacon is not God called.
Acts 18:24-28 Apollos gets taught more perfectly
- He was a man that was doing the Lord’s work unlawfully.
- Apollos knew only the baptism of John, The Baptism – He had scriptural baptism – but hadn’t joined a church – and didn’t have authority to do any baptizing.
- John the Baptist received authority from God – John could not give authority to anyone else.
Acts 19:1-7 Paul Baptizes these of Ephesus
1) Acts 18:23 Beginning of Pauls third missionary journey.
2) Paul goes back to Ephesus and finds those who Apollos baptized, teaches
them, and then baptized them.
3) The people before Paul did not have scriptural baptism.
4) If anybody could have baptized them they would have been all right – but
they were not.
I Cor. 12:12-13 Baptized before Church membership
- Into – with reference to.
- Baptism does not place a person into the Church / baptism does not change location / but is connected to it.
- Through out the scriptures the only reason whey people are baptized is to be a member of a New Testament Church.
